Love-Leigh Thoughts and Ideas

I have fallen in love with lemons ! I know it sounds weird but they are awesome ! I have been using lemons to help clean the house. The smell great and clean great too ! I have used the good old baking soda and lemon trick on sinks, the bathtub, kitchen counters you name it , I’ve cleaned it. Last Friday I cleaned the cutting block with a lemon sliced in half – Did you know that lemons can clean your cutting board? The acid in them sanitized the wood and even gets into all those cutting marks !  I used the other half of the lemon to clean my stove top. Did you also know that lemons are a natural degreaser? We have almost lived in our home a year , and I have never been able to get the grease off of our stove no matter how hard I try . Well guess what its GONE ! I just cut a lemon in half rubbed it on my trouble grease spots and then dried it with a clean kitchen towel !

I have never minded doing laundry. It has always been one of those things that I kind of enjoy doing ( I don’t know why ).  I would often do Ryan’s laundry when I went to visit him at his Mom’s house – just to help out . The only thing I don’t care for with laundry is putting it away. I would wash and fold all day long as long as someone else put it away.

So now that I have you thinking about laundry ……. It brings me to this point : Do you know what is in your laundry detergent? Go right now and pick up your bottle of detergent . What are all of those big words? what chemicals are in there? And why on earth are you paying that much for it?  This is the point I got to about 2 weeks ago. It’s no secret that we are trying to cut back on expenses . I listed some of the top products we shell out serious money for and laundry detergent was number 1 !  In an effort to better to our wallet, bodies , and the environment I started to look into homemade options.

This is a tried and true recipe we are currently using and I LOVE IT !

2-cups finely grated soap anything Like Ivory, Dr. Bonner . Just stay away from heavily perfumed soap.

1- cup washing soda

1-cup Borax

Mix well and store in an air tight container. Put 2 tablespoons full in with your laundry. Easy peasy !

It only took about 30 minutes to make this  and it should last awhile. And how much did it cost you may ask? Here is a breakdown of how much it cost: Borax $2.79 , Washing soda:$2.99 , soap $1.99   total cost : $7.77  the nice thing is the next time I want to make more the only thing I will have to buy is a bar of soap. The rest of the ingredients should last me at least 2 more times of making detergent !

Thursday I went to clean my kitchen sink and remembered that I was out of cleaner . I have been using comet ( This is the only non-green cleaner we use in our house ) I didn’t know what the “green” equivalent  is . So I jumped online to see if I could clean my sink with anything I already had around the house . This is what I found :

Cut a lemon in half . Dip the lemon in baking soda and scrub .

So that is what I did ! The sink smelled great , It was also very shiny,  I didn’t have to deal with stinky cleaners , and I didn’t have to run out and buy anything ! The only thing I didn’t like is I have a very old white porcelain sink and it did very little in making my sink white .   But for the most part I would use it again in a heart beat.

So  it’s that time of year again the weather is getting chilly. This  Fall/ Winter Ryan and I are committed to saving $ ,to be specific with our home  . We are working on other areas too but our home costs us the most amount of $ . By home I mean , utility bills, house up keep , grocery – that kinda stuff.  Here are a few steps we have taken to help reduce our utility bills in the last week:

1.) Installed a programmable thermostat – we now turn down our heat when no one but the dog is home ,and at night .

2.) Hot water tank blanket – this alone is supposed to help reduce the energy you use by 35 %

3.) Cleaned out the dryer vents – then ripped apart and cleaned the dryer insides. We went from 2-3 cycles to dry a load of cloths to 1 cycle ! This is going to help out a lot ! And it only took about an hour !

4.) Re-taped the air ducts in our basement .

5.) A flap style dryer vent  for the outside. This opens to vent when the dryer is on and then closes when the dryer is off. It prevents cold air from getting into your house. The one we have right now is just open to the outside.

6.) Caulk – Our home is old – built-in 1918 –  it’s drafty . I started to notice that there is a gap between the wall and window frames in some of the rooms . I started  to caulk around then and I already notice a big difference !

7.) CFL Bulbs – After talking to my Dad – he said this is the biggest impact you can make on your electric bill . Ryan and I have only switched over 2-rooms in our house those bulbs are $$$$ . But worth it !

8.) This one sounds silly – but I think it will add up . I stopped using my big coffee pot. I now use my coffee press. Now here is my logic behind it . My coffee pot was plugged in all day every day . Now I don’t use any electric. Now here’s the worst part about using the big coffee pot. Ryan does not drink coffee so all that was doing was making a cup or two for me ! Now I kept my big coffee pot for when we have people over but , my hope is that by not using it everyday it will save us some $ .

9.) Foam inserts for the light switches . A simple foam insert that goes around the light switch to keep air from leaking in from outside !

I’m on the hunt for the plug ones next !

So there you have it 9 simple things we have done in the last week to help reduce our impact on the environment and save us $ its a win win !

I think “free” is my new favorite word ! Its funny but as I get older I love shopping for deals , and receiving things for little or no cost to me .  My Mom was nice enough to let me look through her Halloween decorations last night and pick out anything I wanted. I didn’t have time this morning to take pictures of everything , but I’ll give you a sneak peek 🙂

We found these old apple crates in the Garage attic . My Mom has lived in her house for close to 30  years and she said they had to be there before she bought the house ! I like they way they are but I have also thought about painting them. What  do you think? Paint or no paint?

Ryan and I are were looking over our finances last week and decided that at this point in our life we need to save more money. And try to pay off as much student loan debt as possible.  After looking over our phone bill and cable bill I decided that we would make the “grown-up” decision and cut costs way back.  Buy cutting out tv we saved $130.00 a month ! Then I took a look at our cell phone bill. Just by cutting out the “data” package we will save $50.00 a month !

Now here’s the kicker I have never been without cable tv in my life.  I was sad to see it go . But this weekend was so productive I wish I would have gotten rid of it a long time ago ! Here is what we got done: Friday – Cleaned the house , baked cookies, made fresh bread, made a pumpkin pie, made and apple pie,  made applesauce , cooked dinner. Did 5 loads of laundry. Made a Fall table runner for our dining room table.  Went on my very first grocery trip by myself. This is a very bid deal considering I am almost 25 years old and have only had my drivers licence for a little over a month .  Saturday – Started to clean out stuff I want to have a big Fall clean out and donate anything we no longer want or need.  Talked to my  Dad , did the dishes, got some sewing done, went to the post office , dropped off our cable box at ups so they can send it back to our cable company. Cooked dinner we had ribs – I don’t eat them but my husband LOVES them.  My mom, step dad and my brother came over. I proudly showed off my pumpkin pie I had never made one before .  Sunday Cleaned out the basement ! Did laundry, cleaned out all of our Christmas decorations . I’m donating a box and bag full of Christmas stuff we don’t use  ! Did the dishes, watched Project Runway online 🙂 , Cooked dinner with Ryan . Had my MIL , Ryan’s Grandma and his little brother over for dinner, Had a nice Chat after dinner, And got a FREE box of fabric 🙂 , Watched The Omen with Ryan last night . All and all  I think I can get used to this no  tv thing 🙂 I love being able to say how much I got done this weekend 🙂
