Love-Leigh Thoughts and Ideas

I have fallen in love with lemons ! I know it sounds weird but they are awesome ! I have been using lemons to help clean the house. The smell great and clean great too ! I have used the good old baking soda and lemon trick on sinks, the bathtub, kitchen counters you name it , I’ve cleaned it. Last Friday I cleaned the cutting block with a lemon sliced in half – Did you know that lemons can clean your cutting board? The acid in them sanitized the wood and even gets into all those cutting marks !  I used the other half of the lemon to clean my stove top. Did you also know that lemons are a natural degreaser? We have almost lived in our home a year , and I have never been able to get the grease off of our stove no matter how hard I try . Well guess what its GONE ! I just cut a lemon in half rubbed it on my trouble grease spots and then dried it with a clean kitchen towel !

I have never minded doing laundry. It has always been one of those things that I kind of enjoy doing ( I don’t know why ).  I would often do Ryan’s laundry when I went to visit him at his Mom’s house – just to help out . The only thing I don’t care for with laundry is putting it away. I would wash and fold all day long as long as someone else put it away.

So now that I have you thinking about laundry ……. It brings me to this point : Do you know what is in your laundry detergent? Go right now and pick up your bottle of detergent . What are all of those big words? what chemicals are in there? And why on earth are you paying that much for it?  This is the point I got to about 2 weeks ago. It’s no secret that we are trying to cut back on expenses . I listed some of the top products we shell out serious money for and laundry detergent was number 1 !  In an effort to better to our wallet, bodies , and the environment I started to look into homemade options.

This is a tried and true recipe we are currently using and I LOVE IT !

2-cups finely grated soap anything Like Ivory, Dr. Bonner . Just stay away from heavily perfumed soap.

1- cup washing soda

1-cup Borax

Mix well and store in an air tight container. Put 2 tablespoons full in with your laundry. Easy peasy !

It only took about 30 minutes to make this  and it should last awhile. And how much did it cost you may ask? Here is a breakdown of how much it cost: Borax $2.79 , Washing soda:$2.99 , soap $1.99   total cost : $7.77  the nice thing is the next time I want to make more the only thing I will have to buy is a bar of soap. The rest of the ingredients should last me at least 2 more times of making detergent !

Thursday I went to clean my kitchen sink and remembered that I was out of cleaner . I have been using comet ( This is the only non-green cleaner we use in our house ) I didn’t know what the “green” equivalent  is . So I jumped online to see if I could clean my sink with anything I already had around the house . This is what I found :

Cut a lemon in half . Dip the lemon in baking soda and scrub .

So that is what I did ! The sink smelled great , It was also very shiny,  I didn’t have to deal with stinky cleaners , and I didn’t have to run out and buy anything ! The only thing I didn’t like is I have a very old white porcelain sink and it did very little in making my sink white .   But for the most part I would use it again in a heart beat.

I made homemade potato chips tonight and boy were they good !  So good infact that Ryan asked me to make more  !

Here’s what I did:

Heat oven to 450*

slice 4 potatoes – I used our food processor , but I would have made them without one. Just slice potatoes thin.

Put sliced potatoes  in between paper towels and soak up the water , so the potatoes are dry.

Oil up 2- baking sheets with EVOO just enough to coat the pan.

Place potatoes in a single layer on the baking sheets.

Spice however you want them. I used sea salt , and pepper .

Now put them on the top rack of your oven . Bake for 10 minutes . We checked ours at 10 minutes and then put them back in for about 3 more minutes.  You will have some dark ones – even if you think they are all sliced the same size some will be thinner and will darken up.

Let cool for 10 minutes then enjoy 🙂

Where did October go ? It seems like it just started and now it’s already November !

Autumn is always my time to reflect – I don’t know why but it is. The number one thing I have learned this year is Ryan is 100% right –   I need to make more time for myself. To do the things I want to do for me , and no one else. I am a people pleaser – I have led my whole life serving other people’s needs before my own.  I spent so much time on others that I have completely left myself out.  This autumn and winter I would really like to focus on myself again. Even if I have to tell people “no”  – this will be hard for me to do but I feel like that is the only way to gain my life back.  I have even had guilt about having a craft room. I tell Ryan every few weeks maybe we should just turn it into a spare room so people could stay here if they wanted to  EX: we have friends that live about 45 minutes away but that work in our area at odd times things like that . Or if someone wanted to come hang out have a few drinks they could stay the night and not share the couch with the dog …..  Ryan keeps telling me to not give it up , that  just need to make more me time.   I think he is right. When we went through our pre-marital counseling we were asked to make goals for each other and  the number one thing we both said was for us to make more time to do what we want to do instead of what we “have” to do. I hope that we continue to strive to do just that  🙂
